Guidelines to a successful Barrier System
Grade entrances, exits and access areas into High, Medium and Low traffic areas and diversify flow to advantage.
Calculate the pedestrian flow between maintenance periods.
Avoid pivot or acute turning points.
An effective Barrier zone should be of sufficient dimensions to permit the removal of water, soil, grit and other particulates from shoes and wheeled traffic, before reaching main circulation areas.
The minimum distance to ensure both shoes contact the matting is 1.83 metres.
Consider Imbibition (water holding) values of intended barrier products. (see details below)
Select colours and designs that are blended specifically to minimise the effects of soiling.
Select products for Barrier zones which can be easily and effectively cleaned as part of a Cleaning and Maintenance programme
Product Evaluation
Only entrance products that conform to the following requirements will provide the level of performance to be an effective component of Barrier System.
1) High moisture absorbency
It is essential under wet conditions to select a product which has a combination of fibres that will effectively remove surplus moisture from pedestrian and wheeled traffic.
This is called the 'imbibition Value'. This value states the percentage of weight of water remaining in a fibre after it has been severely centrifuged, from a saturated condition. It represents the amount of shoe soiled water retained by the material, which cannot be further transferred.
The 'Imbibition Value' of fibres must be taken into account when selecting products for Barrier Systems. The following table shows some comparative values.
| Viscoe |
80 - 90% |
| Wool |
45% |
| Cotton |
42% |
| Nylon |
12 - 16% |
| Polypropylene |
2% |
2) Scrapers
A proven scraper is the key to the effective removal of dirt and soil from pedestrian and wheeled traffic, and is the high performance factor in specification.
Threshold scrapers are manufactured in several forms. The Primary Exterior areas they are produced in rubber or aluminium with unique 'Bridge' construction and water drainage.
The new 'T' range of entrance carpets for Primary and Secondary Entrance areas have a choice of heavy monofilament with over 40,000 scrapers per square metre of multifilament with over million scraper points per square metre woven into the carpet.
3) Resistance to abrasion
Barrier zones are exposed to heavy wear by virtue of concentratrated pedestrian traffic. It is therefore essential to use a product which has the right qualities and a balance of fibres to produce an effective hard wearing surface.
4) Appearance retention
All Threshold products are manufactured to retain as much of the original appearance when subjected to correct Cleaning and Maintenance procedures.
5) Stability
Diminsional stability is of paramount importance to avoid any hazard that would be likely to impede passage of pedestrians especially people with walking aids or wheelchairs.
6) Tuft anchorage
Tuft anchorage is a recognised test in the field of floorcoverings. The combination of different types of fibres demands a homogenous backing treatment which encapsulates the base of each tuft, ensuring strong tuft anchcorage.
7) Colour fastness
All selected colours should be tested to conform with ISO 105. Additionally they should be blended and designed to minimise the effects of soiling.
8) Cleaning and Maintenance
Cleaning and Maintenance is the very essence of good housekeeping. Correct Cleaning and Maintenance routines and frequencies should be established to achieve optimum levels of cleaning performance, which is the key to appearance retention and soil trapping. Good cleaning regimes lead to enormous savings whilst poor cleaning performance results in poor product performance and reduced appearance retention.
9) Safety
Threshold scraper products are manufactured with Threshold TFR Flame Retardant backing. The heavyweight backing construction imparts excellent lay-flat properties.
Only products in the Threshold Scraper Range meet every requirement in the Product Evaluation.
The Threshold Factor
Threshold's unique record of achievements is why the company is the first name in entrance flooring. A constant improvement in products are services is why specifiers, architects and designers choose Threshold Barrier Systems and products. Manufacturing superiority, designs and colours plus the wide range of product options ensures there is a Threshold solution to all entrance problems.
|
These are a just few of the key points in The Threshold Factor: |
|
|
|
Most effective scrapers
Threshold monofilament and multifilament scrapers remove more soil and grit than competitors |
|
|
|
Most moisture absorbency
Threshold fibres and construction out perform all others in absorbency tests. |
|
|
|
Most cost effective
Where limited space dictates size of Barrier zone Threshold out-performs competitors. In large areas less Threshold product is required than others. |
|
|
|
Appearance Retention and Refurbishment
Threshold products give optimum protection to other floorcoverings, as well as higher levels of appearance retention and extended refurbishment intervals. |
|
|
|
90% savings on Cleaning and Maintenance
By installing properly planned Threshold Barrier Systems and strict adherence to recommended Cleaning and Maintenance schedules, up to 90% savings annually can be made on maintenance costs. |
